Trieste

Nestled between the green landscape of the Karst and the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea, Trieste is the most international of the cities in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in a dynamic state of evolution and at the same time truly unique for its mixture of languages, cultures and religions, with a Central European matrix fused with its Mediterranean soul. Trieste is the capital of the Region, and it boasts one of the most beautiful squares overlooking the sea: Piazza Unità d'Italia.

Trieste is also the city of coffee and literature: numerous and beautiful are the literary cafés, historical places with retro charm once frequented by great authors such as James Joyce, Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba and many more, still loved by writers and intellectuals to this day.

The capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia is at the heart of an extensive innovation ecosystem that includes universities, research centres and science clusters, and is the second Italian province in terms of the number of innovative start-ups. Two universities are active in the city: the University of Trieste, renowned for its economic-legal and technical-scientific faculties, and the International School for Advanced Studies, which provides postgraduate education in the disciplines of physics, mathematics and neuroscience. Trieste is also home to many research centres, including the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, Elettra Sincrotrone, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, and the Area Science Park, one of the largest and most comprehensive science and technology parks in Europe.

The Central European and cross-border spirit, the union of different people and cultures is a synthesis of the soul of the entire Region, which next year will celebrate GO!2025, with Gorizia and Nova Gorica united under the title of European Capital of Culture 2025. Two cities, one border and a laboratory for the future of Europe, combining sharing, innovation and new life.
