Launch of the OECD’s Report: “The Next Production Revolution: Implications for Governments and Business”

Within the framework of the 2017 Italian G7 Presidency, the Ministry of Economic Development organizes the launch of the OECD’s Report “The Next Production Revolution: Implications for Governments and Business”. The Report will be presented the 10th of May, in Rome, with the introduction of the Deputy Minister of Economic Development Teresa Bellanova. The event will start at 2:30 p.m., with the participation of Gabriela Ramos, Chief of Staff and G20 Sherpa OECD, Raffaele Trombetta, Italy’s G7/G20 Sherpa, and Stefano Firpo, Director General for Industrial Policy of the Ministry of Economic Development.

The next production revolution will be driven by the spread of new technologies and new production processes, like 3D print, biotechnologies, artificial intelligence and data-driven production. The OECD’s Report explores the consequences of the spread of the new technologies in the economy and in the labor market, over the near term (to around 2030). Compared to earlier industrial revolutions, induced by steam and electrification, the technologies revolution will occur more quickly. For this reason, policy makers need to monitor the changes in the labor market, and to manage the adjustments on education, labour mobility and regional development.

The rapid spread of new technologies will need the adequacy of training systems and the acquisition of digital skills will become essential. Data will be central to 21st century production, as long as the investments in Research & Development. Public understanding and acceptance of new production technologies also will be crucial to build a long-term thinking.
